Sterling Satterfield, Digital Transformation Supervisor
A consistent theme in all our success stories is finding a change-maker willing to take on the archetypal Hero’s Journey that so many of our movies and storybooks instill in us. If you are a Star Wars aficionado like me, we look for our Rey or Luke Skywalker. In our most recent successful JOYN FDG Permian Basin implementation with ConocoPhillips, Sterling Satterfield’s leadership has been nothing short of heroic.
When I first met Sterling he was already flagged as a leader by his executive leadership team and was attending our many customer community meetings. In learning what rapidly our other customers were deriving value, he played a critical role in awakening his leadership team to the urgency in needing to move to a more field-friendly mobile platform. He rose their consciousness around not being left behind by their industry peers, and played a key role in helping down select the best possible vendor for the job.
His leadership did not stop there. He took on the task of piloting and then implementing JOYN FDG. As one of the most critical projects in the company, all eyes were on him. And in the process, he weathered internal odds of expected fears and inertia towards change. He did so with patience, consistent feedback, and demonstrating value every step of the way for all parties involved. And when needed he drew boundaries that galvanized the team and executive leadership alike towards a common goal – value to the field, rapidly.
I watched and supported Sterling as he tirelessly negotiated with us as the vendor, advocating for critical items for the company to move forward with our innovative platform. I cheered him on as he left no stone unturned to understand the needs of the field, and ensured back office requirements wouldn’t get in the way of field operational goals first. He created necessary alliances, broke down communication walls, and tackled fears from team members as much time as it took to get the job done. Never resting until all parties felt that their concerns were addressed.
To accomplish a complex integration with existing systems, while managing executive expectations is no easy feat. Now, add to this an additional complexity of acquisition in the midst of the project. You can begin to understand the metaphorical dragons he has slain to deliver value to the field and the company.
Under his leadership and strong support of Janis Moore and Jeannie Sillas in the field, 130 routes went live recently. They did a steady rollout, learning from each one, and ensuring they carried lessons learned from one to another. He worked tirelessly alongside Jeannie and the field leaders to help them feel comfortable in transitioning off of their trusted grease sheets – a Herculean task. The Daily Production Reports were unlike any other requirements we’ve seen in our many projects. And Sterling’s persistence paid off – these DPRs provided great time savings for the LO’s.
The transformation team received a lot of solid feedback from lease operators, and that has equal amounts to do with his leadership as it does with our JOYN product. We are only as successful as the customer wants us to be. And Sterling demonstrated and instilled a deep desire for success within every team member he worked with. Including us. He inspired us just as much.
We are proud to have him as part of our JOYN Advisory Council, and look forward to many more success stories.
